When we started work on the special museum exhibit, word spread around the area that we were collecting stories about pilots and people who were involved in the field of aviation. One of those leads brought us to the story of William Shirley Karr.
To our delight, Karr had left behind a treasure trove of photographs and memorabilia that helped us to tell his story. I spent a blustery
winter afternoon with his nephew Rodney Karr, who generously unpacked the stacks of photographs and records from his uncle’s time as an aerial photographer for the Army Air Corps.
Each time I sat down for a conversation with a family, I was taken by their pride in the materials and stories that filled the carefully preserved boxes. Rodney was no exception. He adopted his uncle’s love of photography and has recorded family memories for many years.
